Got this motor from my brother in law. He said about 5years ago he took it to a mechanic who freshened it up and it ran greatafterwards. but then had sat for a few years. Looks like all fuel lines werereplaced, carb float, seat and needle, points, etc... When i got itthis year the motor wasn't running well , seemed to cut out, andtough to start afterwards.
I am mechanically inclined an have worked on many small engines in thepast, just the non water type. I suspected a possible electrical a fuel issueso I began to diagnose. I first went through the entire carb and looked good, but ensured all ports/jets were completely clean and unobstructed. I thenpulled the flywheel off to inspect that area. Looked like it had been gonethrough before, with new condensers and points. I did adjust the pointsslightly using the ohmmeter method. Everything else looked in great shape.
The issue that I am having is it appears the carb bowl is not getting enoughfuel supply as the engine dies after running it for a bit at idle. I can pullthe drain plug after it dies and see not much or any fuel coming out. Fromthere, I looked at the float in the carb and it appears to be adjust perrecommendations. The bulb on the fuel line does not seem soft so I didn’t thinkthat was an issue. If I squeeze the bulb, I can get gas to come out of thedrain plug in the bowl.
This tells me that the issue is may be the fuel pump, butnot ruling out anything from the tank to the pump. This is where I am stumped abit and looking for suggestions because I haven’t dealt with this style of fuelsupply before. The fuel pump appears to be newer, probably replaced 5 years agoby the mechanic, it is the newer style that is commonly used. I checked thescreen and it looks good, fuel will come out when squeezing the bulb. I decidedto disassemble the fuel pump to see if something was bad inside. Of course Ididn’t realize the amount of parts inside of this pump and have to put ittogether properly, but all the innards appear to be fresh.
When I put the pump back together assuming it is not theissue, this leaves only the gas tank and the fuel line/bulb to the pump. I hadbought the 3 gallon tank, it is an atwood brand, auto vent of some sort whereyou don’t adjust any venting. Not sure how that works but that’s what it says. The bulb always seems firm when pressed so it doesn’t appear that there is anair leak.
With all this being said, does anyone know what I mightbe missing, or need to inspect further?
Thanks in advance
