Johnson 70 hp question

I have a 1976/1977 Johnson formula E outboard my question is how do I change the impeller, and should that motor spray a stream of water out when motor is running the motor will start at the touch of the key but I don't see any water spraying out.

Does your engine have a telltale on it,small tube that protrudes out back or side of engine, usually out starboard side "right side"

You won't get much water out the back till the thermostat opens if the poppet valves are doing their job. You can look at those parts right here on this sight. On a motor of that age might be a good idea to look at that area (unless a salt water engine). Replacing thermostat, poppet seats, etc. is a good idea Fter this many years. Only reason I mention salt water NO NO is because of breaking bolts!(top of cylinder head, you don't have to remove head).

The boat was a gift to me so not sure of its been in salt water I have it running,it fires up crack of key but I don't let it run much at all,I do see water spraying from the front of lower unit area and on each side above where I put the water ear muffs, and a area that has like 6- holes that's on each side, But aim not sure if that's what's it's suppose to do or not. Going to try the impeller replacement this weekend.

Changing the impeller is cheap insurance....I have a 1973 50 hp and a 1975 70 hp and both have the pee hole in the front....
