"I've got a 1970's mod

"I've got a 1970's model 60HP Johnson outboard that has the hydro-electric shift. I recently purchased a shift switch off of ebay (I got it for $26) that mounts inside the control box. The guy I bought it from said that it was out of a Johnson. I installed the switch and everything works, with a catch, I have to push the throttle forward to get reverse to engage and I have to pull the throttle back to go into forward gear (neutral works fine). My question is, can I rearrange the 3 shift wires inside the control box to make the switch work like it should?"

"Use a meter to check the swit

"Use a meter to check the switch. In forward there is no power needed to the solenoids. In nuetral there is 12 volts to green wire. In reverse there is 12 volts to green and blue. You may have the switch mounted backwards, I am not sure if it can be.The motor has to be turning in order for the shift system to work."

"Thanks for the reply, ikea. E

"Thanks for the reply, ikea. Everything voltage-wise checks out, and as far as I can tell, the switch is properly installed. However, the guy I bought the switch from just told me that it was out of an Electromatic. What would this mean to me?"

Wrong switch------It applies 1

Wrong switch------It applies 12 volts in forward----no voltage in nuetral------and 12 volts in reverse. WRONG SWITCH!

"These lower units are simple

"These lower units are simple in my opinion. However many mechanics / shops refuse to work on them because they do not know how , or want to sell a new motor. So it is up to you if you want to take a chance!"

I'll take a chance with it

I'll take a chance with it until I can get the money up to purchase the correct switch. Thanks again for your help!

"this switch,..IS NOT going to

"this switch,..IS NOT going to work...damage is a high probability..a new switch is well over 100.00..cost of rebuilding that lower unit...much more expensive,...in the sev hundred dlr range...EASILY"

"I've already changed out

"I've already changed out the switch, because I changed my mind and I actually didn't want to chance messing the lower unit up. I went to a local boat shop that just opened to see if he had the correct switch and he said he could get one. So until I get the money up, I bought a toggle switch from him and I wired it up last night (I know, its dangerous to do it that way), but it is a temporary fix and it works great!"

"yep,thats another option....t

"yep, thats another option....the prob's from this, usually occur, from an un-familiar driver, that is not aware,or is confused on how it works...very dangerous setup,indeed...pulling a person ,in the water,i would list as an extreme hazard....as well as docking...in the above scenario."
