Johnson 60 starting and idling issue

"Hello,
I have what I believe to be a 1992 60HP Johnson 3 cyl, J60TLENE. The engine is low time, good compression on all cyls. I find that it is hard to start when cold and fires of on one cyl until the Rs come up and then the others fire off. Also when I idle or troll at low Rs she seems to load up and run on less then the 3 cyl until I give her a twist of the throttle and then the others fire off and there is a lot of smoke until it clears. Again mid range and high range (5200)rpm)is fine. Transition is fine once she fires on all 3. I am an old ASE auto tech and I grew up with 2 strokes. My experience tells me that the idle circut is to rich on one or more of the carbs and that is what might cause a cyl or 2 to load up and stop firing until throttle is applied and the cyl clears and fires off. My question is; Is there a idle adjustment on the carbs? My old 60 was jetted and had no adjustment. There is a needle adjustment on the side of the carbs, but I don't know if it is high speed or idle. Also, how do you adjusr multiple carbs? Hhow do you establish a base line to work from? I am used to tuneing multi cyl with one carb. And I know, my shop manual os already on order.

The screws on the side of the

The screws on the side of the carbies are mixture scres and they wouldnt be that far out of adjustment to cause the running probs.

Your engine has a fuel primer system you will see small fuel lines running off to each carby near the mounting flange. while its running remove each hose and there should not be any fuel spraying out. Do the same test and press the choke and see if fuel squirts out of each hose.

It's as if one or two of the cyls stops firing (either to lean/rich or maybe weak spark or incorrect timing) and then with a twist of the tiller throttle they fire with a puff of smoke and she runs fine until she idles down again and begins to shake/miss."
