I have a 1996 johnson 60 that idled and ran fine up until around 4000rpm it would hit a wall.
I began by cleaning carbs. didn’t fix it.
i changed the plugs. didn’t fix it.
I put a new set of reeds on it. didn’t fix it.
checked compression, 130psi on all 3.
i’ve tried 3 different sets of ignition parts and 2 sets of carbs from engines that ran fine and had no luck.
It now has developed a sneeze and idles way too high (even with timing arm all the way back and butterflies closed). I figured it was an air leak somewhere so i’ve replaced all gaskets on the intake side and even the top crankshaft seal and head gasket. no luck.
the only thing i’ve been able to find is that it reads 28° at WOT and random numbers at closed throttle on the timing light on cylinder 1 (when just cranking it with plugs out). this is with 3 different timer bases, stators, cdi boxes, and two different flywheels. What am i missing?? it also does the same thing no matter what coil pack i put on cylinder one so i’ve ruled that out. Any help is appreciated.
