Hello need some direction on which direction the lower case crank seal gets installed. I purchased gasket set 0439083 and the lower seal for the crank appears to different than the OEM seal. The new seal has a spring steel ban on one side. I think this should be installed towards the crank shaft. I tried to attach a picture but can't seem to attach it. Can anyone help with installation of this seal? Thanks I appreciate it.

Model J60ELCIA

Go to ----shop.evinrude.com-------Find your motor and look it up.----The parts diagram clearly shows which way it is installed.

Uh, no it doesn't. I tried that already.
They usually show, but not this one.

I am pretty darn sure that the side with the spring goes UP, or toward the innards of the block.

The seal is made in such a way that gasses pushing against the spring side of the seal will cause the seal rubber surfaces to push out and seal against the crank, if that makes any sense.
Keeps the crankcase pressure for #3 IN, so to speak. That's the way I would install it....

That would be a 2 cylinder motor.----Then look it up for the equivalent 1985 model.----Same engine and the lip / spring is shown facing down away from the block.

You are absolutely right....1985 model shows the inset drawing like I am used to seeing.
AND, most importantly, it shows it opposite of the way I described (figured) how it should go.....

So, seeing this drawing, I would install as Racer points out.

Racerone, I looked it up for the 1985 year and I understand how the seal should be installed. Thanks

The seal that came in the gasket set appears to have a double seal lip on it, I got to figure out how to send a picture than you might understand my problem. Just want to make sure I don't have to tear down the motor again. I could go out and buy the exact replacement seal but I am thinking that this seal is upgraded for a reason. GK
