" Have a 1986 Johnson 60 VRO three cylinder,VRO disabled, running this season for first time on 50:1 mix
Have carried out various jobs on motor over winter, inc strip and build carbs ( no new kits used)also replaced all fuel ( and air) hoses with proprietary hoses. Also replaced primer bulb and moved plastic tanks to front of boat on longer pipe (boat is 16 foot speedboat)
On going out in it today all fine ,started easily,( previously started on muffs at home) ran well at all speeds for about 20 mins -getting very happy, then it started to "bog " no high RPMs staggered back to slip on full throttle but just above idle off plane.Carried out compression check at home,150 PSI on all three (WOT)so I presume that is OK,also spark at all three plugs.
Any clues please where to look,I favour need to rebuild fuel pump ( with a kit ), check hoses and replace with correct OMC parts in case of kinks then all three carbs (ditto kits). Also noticed a small fuel leak from std.OMC connector on tank? need to replace that I think!
BTW Thanks to Joe,who replied very quickly to my first post last week about warm up lever and was quite correct in his answer -many thanks Joe

"Stuart.... That problem is usually due to fouled carburetors with clogged high speed jets, or/and a sticking timer base (under the flywheel).

" Thanks Joe,seems to make sense, however I have checked the "action " of the ignition advance linkage and this moves freely and full range up to the stop at WOT. I hope this means that the timer base is moving ok?.Can I check this w/o removing the flywheel? Also I did strip and clean carbs over the winter and i have to say they did'nt look gummed up at all,I didnt remove any jets tho. just blew them out with low pressure compressed air.Could I have picked up something ( perhaps a bit of rubber swarf from the hoses I cut by hand into one of the carbs and blocked a jet? " BTW I also fitted a Tacho this winter , a Mercury one,I' sure the wiring is OK and it works OK up to about 4000 RPM then it cuts back to Zero until i throttle back , it shows idle speed as about 850 RPM.I dont spose this would have any bearing on the bogging? also I read somewhere that on some models of Johnson outboard that a 2000ohm /half watt resitor inserted between the terminals will cure just these symptoms - I will do that also.
