I am very new to boating. Just

I am very new to boating. Just bought a second hand savage tinny with a 5hp Johnson. Not sure how I can tell if the water pump is working. Are they har to replace. This motor would be more than 10yrs old.

"u need to find the model number,to id it...since approx 1979,there have been overboard water indicators,..spray stream,..installed on almost all of them...since u just got it,..i'd inst a new imp,at the least...not too hard to replace..just need the model number,look on eng for a tag."
 
While you are looking for the

While you are looking for the ID tag .. probably on the transom clamp bracket... also look for a hose running (from the exhaust manifold cover) to an outlet fitting in the rear corner of the lower engine cover. That's the tell tale.

No water from there? start by checking its not blocked then seriously think about replacing the water pump impeller

While you are doing the pump put a hose on the water tube and make sure you can get a flow from that.
