"i got a johnson 55hp that runs fine but wont go into gear.
im still looking to find the right manuel.
i wanted to take the lower end of it and check it out, replace the impeller while i was at it.
..i have undone all the bolts, though cant figure out how to detach the shaft? (i know its a stupid question) can someone help me out please ..Thanks =)"

I assume you're speaking of the shift rod shaft? If so............

Look at the vertical shift rod area under the bottom carburetor. There will be a 3/8 bolt that has a screwdriver slot in its head. That is a shoulder type bolt that retains the top of the shift rod to the clevis lever. Remove it.
