hi can anyone help i have boug

hi can anyone help i have bought a johnson 4hp 2 stroke outboard 1999 model no j4reea i have bother starting it i keep floadng it there are symbols on the front a petrol pump then a petrol pump with a line across it what are these for it has a built in tank or can take an external tank any ideas what i am doing wrong it has only done about 10 hours work in the past

"that 'pump',is your m

"that 'pump',is your manual primer...
pull it out and back in once or twice, then lv in mid position, about a min after starting.."

"Surely the carb on that model

"Surely the carb on that model has strangler flap type of choke, not a pump.

Doesn't the one knob simply put out to close the choke and turn to operate the fuel tap.

The symbol with the line through it indicates the off position for the fuel tap."

hi lads the engine has a pull

hi lads the engine has a pull choke as normal
but to the right of it as i said it has 2 symbols with a knob symbols are gas pump then gas pump with i line through it is the off position for the external gas supply or built in tank my problem is it keeps floading great spark managed to get it running but forgot to open the screw a the top of tank after that i would not fire up the guy i bought from on ebay is on holliday i did not get a manual with it

"i did'nt ck to see exactl

"i did'nt ck to see exactly primer he has,but the symbols he refers to,are for the man primer."

"yes,reg ol chk butterfly,...t

"yes, reg ol chk butterfly,...the signs are just showing u the cold start chk positions.--on and off"

hi i am lost had another look

hi i am lost had another look at these controls
dont understand what you are saying i am new to outboards first year fishing the nob we are talking about is all in one choke and fuel on fuel off do i pull this in & out to prime the fuel before starting and what is the reason it is flooding all the time i pulled on the starter cord for about 30 mins nothing checked spark again all ok still not fire up

"ok...i agree,all my above,got

"ok...i agree,all my above,got confusing,,,,
on ur eng, just forget about the decals........
pull chk knob out all the way,..make sure u have primer bulb,on the fuel hose,firm,..then pull it a cpl times, when it firs slowly reduce the chk,or pulll it out and back till it warms up and runs on its own."

"yep just like any other 2 str

"yep just like any other 2 stroke:chainsaw,weedeater,dirtbike,outboard,etc.........

put it on full choke ---- once it fires for a split second ----reduce your choke to half choke then it should start and stay running------then like jwb says you may have to play with the choke a little depending on how cold it is outside and how cold natured your eng is.

i have 2 small outboards.......and i use a wooden clothes pin to hold the choke in the half way position.........plus the little keeper that holds the choke to full is missing-----so i HAVE TO use a clothes pin.......it just works out that i can also use the choke in many variable positions."

hi another 30 mins pulling no

"Hi Ian,
Before you give up c

"Hi Ian,
Before you give up completely, consider bringing the motor to a shop, or even better, find a neighbor who you know goes fishing or boating from time to time. Have them show you the proper method for starting it, and if it's a shop or a somewhat outboard savvy neighbour, have them check it over to make sure it is in proper running condition. I have helped a couple of my neighbors with their small engine issues, and love to show off my "expertise".
You mentioned that trying to start your motor is not good for your heart, and that is very understandable, but the other side of that statement is the relaxation you could experience by being out on a lake, fishing, or just seeing the sights. If you could get it so you could start that motor in a couple pulls, and be confident it will run when you need it, I'm sure you will enjoy being out on the water. I find I am most relaxed when I'm out on a small lake fishing, using a small outboard to get me to the hot spots.
I realize being new to outboards, and not knowing what to do can be very frustrating, but hope you get it running and find out how fun it can be.

Plus, you already found the best place to ask questions that may come up in the future - this forum.
Good luck.

Wayne"

"ian,

take hood off and see

"ian,

take hood off and see if your choke is closing all the way, and have you tried spraying some pre-mix into the carb? to make sure you arent having fuel delicery problems?

also on one of my small obs i had the same frustration of pulling the rope for about 45min-1hr................mine almost became a trot line anchor............before i realized i had water in the fuel tank-------they havent made one to run on water YET-----wouldnt that be great?!"
