Johnson 35 1981 Shaft issues

I have a 1981 Johnson 35 and have recently bought a new lower-unit and don’t know the year but when I try to put my shaft in doesn’t go all the way down the water pump key indent is about 3 inches higher than it needs to be, any ideas?

Need model # of motor.-----Did you buy the shaft " on line "--- or qualified shop ?----Pictures of old lower unit / new lower unit .----Part # of shaft ?------Not all sellers have stuff identified properly.
