Johnson 33hp gear problem

"I have a johnson Seahorse 33hp 66model outboard and all was fine till I decided to check the gear oil last week. As instructed by my local boat shop, I removed the screws on the starboard side (the bottom one had a 1.5cm long shaft before the screw threads started) all went okay till I put the screws in and I now don't seem to be able to get out of forward gear. I took that bottom screw out again and was able to move the shifter into the neutral and reverse positions (though the prop still won't spin freely) but when I put it back in, the shifter locks up again. Not sure what I should do next. I'd like to have a go at doing it myself but I'm also tempted to take it down to the repair shop (is it a cheap/easy fix or will it cost heaps) Any help or advice would be much appreciated."

"To change the gear lube you remove the two SLOTTED screws--when you removed the Phillips screw you disengaged the shift yoke--without that screw the yoke cant pivot on a stationary point and it moves, preventing the unit from shifting--if you havent moved the yoke too far out of position, you may be able to realign the hole in the yoke with the hole in the housing and slip the screw back in--the unit wont shift until you secure the yoke--if all else fails, you will have to open the lower housing and reset eveything--
you will need a repair kit for that job because you will destroy the seal that seperates the two pieces--if you are going to attempt this you should get a repair manual that covers that model motor--"

"Thanks Tom, I thought something like that may have happened. However, there is only 1 slotted screw on that side of the motor that I can see. How high up should I be looking for the other one? (in the vicinity of the phillips head??) Any idea what a shop would charge to fix this for me...even an indication so I don't get ripped off?"

"The job is easy, providing the screws holding the prop shaft housing are 'removeable' without breaking. You do not need a compleete seal kit, just an o-ring string that You glue in place. Put the engine upside down, (drain the cabs first) and check if the screws may be removed. If you get them loose, just split the housing, realign the shiftfork, put it all back together and the pivot screw in! Less than an hour if screws does not break!"

"Okay, I pulled it apart and it was realy easy to see the problem, Whilst I had it apart I turned the selector shaft thingy around as it had alot of wear on one side and hardly any on the other. I am now finding that it is going into forward alot better and doesn't do the occasional thump that it used to. Great advice guys and many thanks"
