Hello,

I just did a complet rebuild of my Johnson 2hp 2R71A and it will not start.

I have replaced all gasket and pisto ring, also have about 90psi of compression.

New coil, points and condenser, the point gap is set to .020

First initial high and low speed needles that i used is this:

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

What could be the problem? I checked and i have a good spark.

Thanks

Pretty simple little motor. Is spark plug showing wet? Probably not getting gas if you confirmed a nice blue/white spark at 3/8" arc.

No the spark plug is dry.

I have tool that i attached to the spark similar to this that i use test for spark spark tester.jpg

Maybe i should replace the spark plug, since it's pretty much the only thing i did not order for replacement.

Okay....gotta detail carb again I guess. Make sure that little bigger is clean with float set parallel to carb bowl surface while holding it upside down. Careful not to supply any added pressure to the float needle.

when you say little bigger is clean, what are refering to?

the float is parallel.

You need to clean all the Jets and orifices.

Do i need to unplug the hole that are plug with lead and clean those out also?

Because that the only thing a did not do

I manage to get it to run for about a minute yesterday, but today it won't start and look like maybe i don't a spark anymore :(

Okay then we need to confirm adequate spark again before we start to blame the carburetor. We need to see a 3/8 in. arc in crackling white blue color. Tested in open-air without the spark plug, I mean directly from the plug wire to ground.

Ok found the problem!

Brand new faulty condenser, installed the old one and now it will start.

Just need to adjust the high and low needles.

Thanks everybody for all the help, my first rebuild is now almost a complete success.
