johnson 28 hp clutch dog question

gearcase is hard to shift out of gear. I tore gear case down .when I slide clutch dog into either gear I can see part of the detent ball showing on opposite side of clutch dog is this normal . I thought maybe the clutch dog jaws are worn on both sides

Model # of the motor ?---Worn clutch dog would not prevent shifting out of gear.------Those detent balls are used to hold clutch dog in neutral.-----Extra force is needed to go out of neutral.-----This makes for " quick " shifting and less damage to lugs on gears and the dog.----And if throttle is advanced too far it prevents shifting to neutral.------What kind of control box do you have.-----Factory single lever ?----A factory 2 lever control?----Or something else?

I cant read the tag on motor the control box is single lever looks to be origional along with motor. I just aquired this motor on pontoon. My biggest concern is being able to see the detent ball when clutch dog slides in gear. Do the detent balls have anything to do with keeping dog in gear.It feels like clutch dog grabs the ball when trying to slide back to neutral in the pic I have the clutch dog slid all the way in gear If I slide to other gear the dog is visable but on opposite side of dog I just thought the dete There are new cables included with boat could of been a cable problem but it was hard to shift with just the lever. Thank you very much

As clearly stated the detent balls are for neutral.----And motor must be running to shift.----Or an assistant must turn the propshaft when shifting.

Don't they buddy up against the end of the shift doggie to hold from popping back towards neutral? Or is it all in the upper linkage like many motors in the 50's, 60's, 70's?

Just take a look at these parts and it makes it obvious !---Designed to make for quick engagement to prevent damage to the parts.

Ive looked at the prop shaft very carefully The detent definately grab the gears in gear There is nothing in the upper linkage to keep it in gear. I believe both opinions are true. Thanks to all

Yes, Racer has been at it a few more years than me, but we both have lots of experience. I learn lots from watching him.
