Johnson 2000 50hp Powerhead to replace Johnson 2000 40hp Powerhead

I am currently running a 2000 j40plssm. That engine sounds as though it is beginning to pick up a pretty serious piston/cylinder tap. I have the opportunity to pick up a 2000 j50plssm powerhead which I believe is in very good shape and has 150 - 160 psi on each cylinder. This 50hp powerhead includes everything that is typically attached to the powerhead (pretty much everything under the cowling) I am hoping that i can replace the old 40hp engine with the “new” 50hp engine. I am NOT trying to change the hp from 40 to 50. From what I have read so far it seems that if I replace the entire 40hp powerhead (and all accessories) with the 50hp powerhead (and all accessories) and also move the 40hp carb to the 50hp powerhead...... that is pretty much all I need to do to accomplish my goal. I am probably way wrong but thought I'd ask the experts for their input. Got any helpful info? Thanks, Mark S.

Should be a straight forward swap.-----You are sure it is not a gearcase issue on your 40 HP?----Checked lower unit oil ?

Thanks racerone - Haven't checked gearcase. So, I get a tap, tap, tap.... sounds like metal to metal when running at home in tub of running water and in neutral. Tapping increases with rpm increase. I wouldn't know if to you that still sounds like could be gearcase issue. Does that provide any additional helpful diagnostic info? Thanks again.

I can not see , hear or feel your motor.----Start the motor.-----Put a broomstick on the block and your ear.----Repeat with gearcase.---A poorman's stethoscope so to speak.
