I have a 1988 Johnson GT 200 that looses spark. I did some looking into it my self and couldnt figure it out and took it to a dealer every time i took it there it would fire up and run normal, i d pick it up take it home and it wont start. I moved the power pack up and checked the connections nothing looks bad. With me moving things around it decided to spark up and run, about every hour yesterday i would try it and it would fire up, but this morning i tried it and no spark again. i tried moving things but will not spark up. This has been going on all year it will have spark at home get to the lake no spark and get home then there is spark some times and sometimes nothin or faint spark. Anyone have any ideas where my problem could be iam starting to pull my hair out.I read some where to unplug the black and yellow wire there are two black and yellow plug one under the power pack and the other on the outside of the power pack.

Slow cranking due to a bad battery or a defective starter motor will mean " poor or no spark "--------The flywheel must turn rapidly in order to produce spark.----Something to look into for you.

I have the same problem, mine is a 1991 also a 200hp, had the same issue 1.5 years ago, tried many thing with no solution till I put in a new timer base, ran flawless for a year and a half now im having the same issue, got a new timer base on the way...it sucks because i want to say something killed this timer base but is hard to say it was used too, so maybe just gave out, but racerone is right if the motor does not crank a 300 rpms it will not spark, i doubt thats your problem, but think about the timer base, its tuff to isolate an interim fault that is what im going thru right now and ill find out when the new timer base gets here. it could also be the power pack and even a bad stator as well as bad regulator, like i said the ignition system on this things is hard to throubleshoot... i wish it was simple like when we had distributors...LOL

I was always was blaming the wiring because every time i towed it it would change how it ran or if tit ran. Yesterday it ran so i never moved it and today it had no spark. I unplugged the red connector and jumped the starter and still had no spark put all the wiring back in place mounted the power pack and hit the key and it fired up. Come back 4 hrs later no spark.
