I'm putting my buddys 20 hp. Johnson back together. The head gasket aparently had been replaced before. It was leaking water into the cylinder. I assume whoever didn't torque it down correctly. The head is flat & looks good. I'm replacing the head & cyllinder head water cover gasket also. I saw the torque should be 18-20 ft#??? Any help on sequence or any other advice? At what torque should l use on the cyl head water cover? Any help would be appreciated! After running the engine to heat up some retorque again, correct?

Thanks!
Brad

The bolts retaining the water jacket cover are just 1/4x20 bolts. Simply tighten them from the center portion out. There is a specific torque for 1/4x20 bolts but I've never incorporated that... simply tightened them.

The cylinder head is a completely different matter and requires torquing as you know (18-20' lbs)... the sequence is as follows whereas each number is a bolt.

9....10
5.....6
1.....2
4.....3
8.....7

Yeah... after a run or two... re-torque the head bolts... tighten the water jacket bolts if needed.
