I have replaced the main bearings on my 2.5Hp Johnson as they were making a terrible noise. It now sounds great but is not running very well at all.
The initial symptoms (after the new bearings) weres that it would start very easily, first pull but would not tickover at all - it just died. Further, when I opended the throttle fully the revs actually dropped (ie engine ran faster at 3/4 throttle than full throttle) and putting the throttle at 1/2 way point the revs kept going up and down. I ran it like this for a few weekends and then, last weekend, it just refused to start at all.
My diagnosis was that there must be a problem with the fuel supply. So I have stripped and cleaned the carb, reassembled with a new float chamber gasket. I have also stripped and cleaned the fuel tap, removed the inline filter to ellimenate it from enquiries and blown through the fuel hose. Engine now runs really well for a few minutes and then dies! When it dies I have checked the fuel cap vent is open (check), fuel tap is open (check) and float chamber is full (check).
What can it be?
