Johnson 1964 40 HP RKL24L

Most likly you have a wornout clutchdog and F gear. The most common way these get worn is by gently shifting and letting the dog and gear grind.to shift it should be done quickly snap it in gear.

dew2 !!!-----The RKL model is electric shift and does not have a clutch dog !!----------------Terry , is the generator in working condition ???---It must be working in order to maintain the battery for the shift system.---------------If it is jumping out of gear , then most manuals / shops will tell you you need to spend big $$$$ for a new hub and forward spring.-------------If you could walk to my shop I could fix it 2 hrs labour and new oil.

If the unit goes into gear and stays there at a low rpm BUT jumps out of gear at the higher rpm, the usual problem is that the electric shift tension spring has scored against the forward hub. If so, the cure is to replace the hub and spring.

This is assuming that there is no water in the lower unit and you're using the proper gear lube... Premium Blend electric shift gearlube, also known as Type C.
