" I have a chance at an "80's" Johnson 18HP motor for $150; described as runs good, but sometimes doesn't want to, or won't, shift into gear. He was told it appeared to be a problem with the shift yoke.

Since I've not torn a motor down since I worked a little on a '54 Johnson 25 in the '60's, I assume it's pretty much dropping the lower unit to access the yoke/shift dogs?

Is there any characteristics that would indicate one or the other? or other complications?
Obviously I'll insist on seeing it run with muffs or in a "drum".

Thanks!!! "

"Cray..... To my knowledge, and going by the OMC book, there was no 18hp Johnson manufactured in the 1980s. What is the model number of that engine? We would need that to pinpoint the year etc.

Shift problems could be a minor linkage problem, or a very expensive lower unit problem.

" Joe,

Thanks for your response - I followed up on this and it was a little rougher than I wanted to get into, and also it was a long shaft - I'm looking for a short shaft. Seems to be more 14-15' length boats available for short shaft than long shaft motors.

Thanks again. "

Hit something over Memorial Weekend. The motor starts, the shift lever moves from nuetral to eithor forward or reverse, but it doesn't move the boat anywhere.

What's the likely explanation. Where should I start? "
