What year motor? Some of the older ones just use a screen on the front of the fuel pump to keep the big chunks out.
 
you can also get a fuel/water

you can also get a fuel/water seperator from this site or wal-mart.and it takes the place of an inline filter.

i put one on my '79 johnson 115.....ive had water in the tank of one of my small obs and it will give you fits untill you figure out it has water in it.

just a suggestion

David, water seperator is good idea. I need to replace the original, as it seems to get stopped up at full throtle. After motor cuts off, it will restart when I pump the bulb leading me to think there is trash in it. Where is the existing filter located?"

just a thought but have you checked all your anti-syphon valves too?

and tried pumping the bulb before she dies out?

not to alarm you but you may have fuel pump issues if she sucks the carbs dry.

"Thanks guys. I appreciate the diagram, but it doesn't show the filter's place on the engine, the question I was asking all along. Is it behind the white plastic cap that sits behind the air filter? I'm assuming that unscrewing the white plastic nut give access to the filter and it should pull right out. Is that it? Thanks again, DT"

"from the looks of it..it screws into #59 "bracket,fuel components"--with #s 60 and 64 sa seals with #69 holding it in place.......but thats what im gathering from the diagram

it looks to me that #46 pertains to the primer solenoid"
