"I have a 15 horse johnson that was given to my dad by some guys that said they rebuilt the carb, and after the motor wouldn't start because the coils were bad, but it looks like the coils aren't getting power, any ideas, also the model number from what i can uncover from under the paint appears to be 15554c can someone tell me what year this motor was made. thanks."

"The model number of 15554C indicates the engine is a 1975 15hp Evinrude.

You say "The coils aren't getting any power". There is no power (voltage) delivered to the coils. The coils are energized by the magnets in the flywheel rotating past them.

If you intend to keep the engine, it might be a good idea to purchase a service manual. See the icons at the top of the page.

"thanks, I wanted to find out the year before i bought one so i would know the right one. wasn't sure, the motor has been painted, and underneath the original appears to be evinrude blue, and the ser # tag said evinrude while the cowling looks like it says johnson under the who knows how many coats of paint. I know nothing about fixing outboards am actually gonna take it to a guy that does, it needs a few things like the idle control assembly, the bushings in the transom mount and the recoil for the pull cord replaced things like that. Thanks for the info and link, I'm gonna purchase one. just out of curriousity my dad has a 9.9 seahorse that was my grandfathers, model #10R76H could you date it as well. Thanks for the info, appreciate your time."
