Johnson 140 Power Pack

I have an older Johnson 140. One day it starts up fine and runs but then the next day it cranks but won't fire. Then I'll try it again in a few days it starts. Had a mechanic come over and he said the power pack is probably no good. Does this sound right? I don't mind putting the money into it if that's the problem. Any thoughts?

A no $$$$ spent thing to do is to pull the starter motor apart for inspection.
