Johnson 115HP cranking problem

Hello to all, very nice site. Did some reading and searching before
I decided to show how much I don't know.I have a 1982 17' Glasstream with
115HP Johnson that my brother and I have owned for 25 + years. It was
always kept at his place near the lake until he moved out of state about 6
years ago. I bought out his share and for the next 3 years although it wasn't
on the water I would put the ears on and run it for a few minutes every couple
of months or so. J115TLCNB
Health and just laziness caused it to deterioriate over the last 3 years.
I have begun to get it put back in shape and have what may be a very dumb
question. I have checked compression 110-115 all cylinders, checked all cable
connections and put on a new starter. (it was due) I always ran the carbs dry
when I ran it in dry dock. I have removed and cleaned gas tank. Also have tested
spark per information found on this site and it is good. Motor now cranks very
slowly. The battery I have used although not new starts my truck easily. It is CCA
550. What CCA is needed for this motor before I get A new one. Any thoughts or
other suggestions would be appreciated.
thks,

Any regular automotive battery will do but a rule of thumb is for the battery to be rated at least a 70 amp hour battery.

Usually the problem is not the battery but rather a connection somewhere. It can be a loose connection or a tight but dirty connection. This usuually results in a slow cranking starter and a unusually HOT cable at some point. The cable is usually hot somewhere near the problem area.

However, it's best to remove all cables/wires connected with the starter circuit, including the terminals at the battery and the ground connection at the powerhead, starter solenoid, etc. Clean all of the terminals thoroughly and also the components that they attach to. Then tighten the cables/wires as needed either with a wrench or pliers... not your fingers if encountering wing nuts.

Let us know if this solves your problem.
