" Hello Joe,

Noticed something strange with my engine. I was rotating the flywheel by hand and noticed radial play on the flywheel. nut on flywheel is tight. radial plaay is about 0.004". the other engine has almost no play. am i looking at a bad upper crank bearing? it looks like i can just pull the upper crank bearing assembly without dissembling the entire engine? appreciate your input "

"Ed.... I assume that by "Radial Play", you're saying that you can move the crankshaft front to back, side to side etc a distance of .004. If so, the play could be in the top main bearing but it could also be wear in the crankshaft itself. Only way to find out is to pull that upper bearing housing. Yes, you can do that without dismantling the entire engine.... and for what it's worth, that's what I would do.

" Hello Joe,

yes, radial play as in you can move the shaft side to side. i took the upper bearing housing apart and the crank shaft look good. the bearing on the other hand has some pitting and i can feel the play between the bearing and the crank. i could not find a part number in the Johnson parts book for just the bearing. do they only come in a set? do you happen to have a good used one? i bet the cost an arm and a leg new? "

"Ed... Normally that upper bearing is not available by itself, and comes with the upper crankcase head housing, and yes... the arm and leg condition applies <groan>. However all is not lost.... there are identification marks on that bearing which can be matched up at/with most companies that deal with bearings. Also, there are 3rd party companies out there whereas you might be able to locate what you need.... Sierra & Auqa Power come to mind. Many top grade machine shops might be able to steer you in the right direction too. Good luck.
