I'm chasing down what I think is an exhaust leak. My engine runs full rpm when the engine cover is removed however drastically bogs down when the cover is put back on. I have replaced both seals in the lower unit and the o-ring seal where the shift rod enters. I am hoping for it to be something minor (ie gasket). Has anyone anyone ever experienced this?

blocking air availability? pinching/blocking a coolant line/hose. If there was an exhaust leak choking the motor I think you would know by a cover filled with smoke on removal no?

"Brian,

Another possibility is weak vacuum. The cover restricts the airflow a little bit, and if vacuum is weak, it can make a big difference.

BLOWN POWER HEAD GASKET OR EXA

BLOWN POWER HEAD GASKET OR EXAUST GASKET YOU SHOULD START SEEING THE BURNT GAS/OIL seapage @ leak most likely you will need to pull powerhead

"Your explanation indicates an exhaust leakage. If so, running the engine with the hood off should reveal exhaust gases in the powerhead area somewhere. The power loss would be due to the exhaust gases being drawn into the carburetor throats."

"I appreciate everybody's advice and for the most part tried all. The compression is great and the plugs are clean. Soapy water revealed nothing. One interesting thing though: When idling (out of the water) and the engine cover is locked down, the engine struggles. Just releasing or unlocking one of the cover handles causes the engine to run fine. It appears to be vacuum related to me althouh I don't know. Still hoping for something minor!"
