"Had a no spark issue on my Johnson 115hp 1996 J115SXEDR. It's got optical ignition, I've got the timing set and done the sync. It's actually starting and idling better than ever. When I start to go over 3000 rpm it just boggs down, does not cut out if I pull back on the throttle it runs just fine @2000.

Pulled the port and starboard temp sensor wires,
just left them hanging, still bogs/misses at 3000.

I don't see much of a difference when I pull either of the top two spark plug wires. When I pull either of the bottom two it stumbles at idle.

Is it possible this thing is running on two cylinders?

I've got to do a couple more tests once the weather allows. I'm thinking coil or power pack, leaning towards coil.
Is there's a way to test the regulator rectifier?"

Could you have a fuel problem?

Could you have a fuel problem? High speed jet plugged? Doesn't the upper carb feed the upper 2 cylinders? Could you have a fuel problem in upper carb.

"It's possible but I actua

"It's possible but I actually have 4 carbs, one for each cylinder. The engine was running fine until a few weeks ago when it just cut out and wouldn't start again, I replaced the stator which gave better spark. I think the actual problem was a kill switch wire."

"Jim.... I retired some years

"Jim.... I retired some years before your engine came into existence, therefore my knowledge of its circuitry is about zilch.

However the spark test is a common one that I suggest you try.

Remove all spark plugs. Hook up a spark tester to all four plugs, setting the gap to 7/16". No tester? Build the one below.

Crank engine and observe the spark. While doing so, advance the throttle/timing so as to check for a diffence in the spark at various positions. A difference may exist due to a frayed wire, whatever.

The spark should jump that 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP!

(Spark Tester - Home Made)
(J. Reeves)

A spark tester can be made with a piece of 1x4 or 1x6, drive a few finishing nails through it, then bend the pointed ends at a right angle. You can then adjust the gap by simply twisting the nail(s). Solder a spark plug wire to one which you can connect to the spark plug boots, and a ground wire of some kind to the other to connect to the powerhead somewhere. Use small alligator clips on the other end of the wires to connect to ground and to the spark plug connector that exists inside of the rubber plug boot.

Using the above, one could easily build a spark tester whereas they could connect 2, 4, 6, or 8 cylinders all at one time. The ground nail being straight up, the others being bent, aimed at the ground nail. A typical 4 cylinder tester follows:

..........X1..........X2

.................X..(grd)

..........X3..........X4

Compression is usually just shy of 100 psi and considered normal. Your compression?

The regulator/rectifier? The tachometer operates off of the charging system. If the tachometer is functioning normally, you can pretty well consider that charging setup to be okay."

"there is a known prob,in the pwrpk,about this,i think,u can find the info,on the cdi website...ign system needs to be ck'ed,but i feel u r looking at a new pack...dont buy one,...till other items r ck'ed."

"I've not tested the compr

"I've not tested the compression yet, will do that before testing on the water, just waiting for this storm to pass in the NE. I've always been a concerned that I might damage the pack or something just grounding the plug wires to the block, is that OK to do on this model?

The regulator is suspect though, I think the tach stuck at 1000 a couple of times during water testing, I also showed 14.5v on my Fishfinder which is much higher than normal. I need to test it on the water again after swapping the coils and get a timing light on it, kinda tough to do while getting up on plane."

Compression is just over 100 o

Compression is just over 100 on 3 cylinders. The number one cylinder is 75psi. Starting a new thread on that.
