I found a 1973 Johnson 55 for

I found a 1973 Johnson 55 for sale with no spark. I'm wondering if the lower unit will interchange with a 1969. The 69 is electric shift. It would be nice to have a parts motor for the asking price of $350. The problem is that its 200 miles away and don't want to pick it up if its diffrent or I'll have 2 junkers sitin here. If anyone knows pleas let me know thanks : Derek

The electric shift and manual

The electric shift and manual shift do not interchange!!!!

"It was advertised as a 1973 55hp, but now the guy won't get back to me since I asked for numbers. something fishy."

"The 55hp Johnson model was manufactured in:

1969,76,77,78,79, and 1980 thru 1990 (That's as far as my book goes). However, there were no 55hp models manufactured in 1973."

Student.... The 1968 model was a Evinrude. Johnson did not have the 55hp that year. That's why I didn't list it.

The 3 cylinder 55HP is FEATUR

The 3 cylinder 55HP is FEATURED on the front page of the 68 JOHNSON factory brochure. Page 2 and 3 have all the hoopla about the new era starting at OMC.I remember it well.

"Very strange. I don't recall that myself. I wonder why the OMC guide book doesn't list the 1968 55hp Johnson. No matter, I wasn't figuring on purchasing one (grin)."

"I went to a johnson etc. deal

"I went to a johnson etc. dealer here and he told me this motor was an 1981. He is wrong and won't beliave me. Model #55ES 69A. Serial # C18715. He says the C1 means its a 1981. Theres no way, because its a 3 cyl. The newer model numbering system would start with C1 for 1981 but its the serial number. Anyway maybe the leg parts are the same. He printed a blow up picture and everything looks the same, even the electric shift. I told him if the parts are wrong I'm not paying shiping for right ones and return fees. Maybe they are the same we'll see."

"Teach your Johnson dealer the

"Teach your Johnson dealer the difference between a Model number and a Serial number. Your engine is a 1969 model.

The model number is 55ES69A (69 being the year). If it was possible for the engine to be a 1981, there would be a "CI" in place of the "69".

In the serial number of C18715, the digit following the "C" is a "1", not a "I".

On the later engines, starting with the 1980 models, OMC started using the code which is the word INTRODUCES wherea each letter stood for a number..... I=1, N=2, T=3, etc etc.

If the dealer is ordering 1981 parts, guaranteed they won't come close to fitting your engine."

There was a mechanical shift, two cylinder 50 hp in 1973. Not a 55 hp. 1974, 1975, and (1976 ,that was the first year for the two cylinder 55) and I believe 1977 and later that lower unit was downsized and would not fit a 1973 model. Not sure if a 1973 65 hp would fit, I think the case was the same, not sure about driveshaft spline. You would need to do a part number search to see what would match. Does your engine look like this one?
