1958 Evinrude V4 50hp #50515. I have been trying to take the lower unit off to do the waterpump impeller but the motor will not come apart. I took the outer cover off (the one with the exhaust coming through it.) I removed the small plate with 2 screws in it and all I saw is a rod with some kind of clamp and bolt. Does that have to be disconnected in order to replace the impeller? How does this thing come apart?? I would appreciate any help you can give me.

"Ricky.... The engine requires a shift rod in order to shift from one gear to another. Now, guess what that clamp holds together? (grin)

That clamp is a brass shift connector that connects the upper to lower shift rod. Remove only one of the two 3/8" hex head bolts you see there and the lower unit will drop away.

When installing, align the groove in the shift rod with the bolt hole before attempting to insert and tighten the bolt.
