" Joe, I need some help with the regulator on my Evinrude electric shift. Full text is under the message "Need help hooking up regulator, Evinrude electric shift" dated 5-27. Can't find anyone locally and previous attempts on this site yielded no responses. Thank you very much, Marty. "

Marty.... I'll look at it

Marty.... I'll look at it and get back to you.

NOTE... There should be a plate on the transom bracket with the model number on it. Also should be a core plug on the powerhead (looks like a small quarter sized freeze out plug) with that number on it. Engine models vary and I'll need that number to pinpoint what you have... or you can send pictures of what you have to me at: [email protected]

" Joe, thanks for getting back

" Joe, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I cannot find a welch plug with a model number anywhere on the powerhead, maybe it's under the flywheel? The model number on the transom clamp is 60652R (1966,60HP) but the guy I got it from had taken the powerhead from another engine and put it on this one. He told me it was a '65 or '66 60HP but I really don't know. He also said he changed the magneto ignition to a battery fired ignition, so I suppose he could have taken the charging system from another engine as well. I had an old timer look at it and he seemed to think it was a 75HP by what he could see of the outer edge of the head gasket, which means I may be using the wrong gas-oil mix as I see the 75's were made from '60-'65. He told me how to hook-up the regulator and then looked at the schematic in my manual and said yes just follow the schematic but it was totally different from what he first told me. I'll send some photo's as soon as I can that show the flywheel, rectifier, and regulator. If I'm unable to verify the model year is there any way to determine if it's a 75HP? I don't want to under oil this thing. Thanks, Marty "

"Marty.... Regardless of what

"Marty.... Regardless of what year or hp that V/4 is, you can safely use the 50/1 fuel/oil mixture due to the fact that all of the bearings within it are either roller or needle type bearings.

The core plug defining the model number should be on top of the powerhead near the port cylinder head gasket. If it's missing, you'll see a shallow cavity with a diameter about the size of a quarter.

Sorry to say.... I've checked my books, bulletins, etc and do not have the wiring schematic for any of those older V/4 engines. And unfortunately I do not remember exactly how that wiring was routed.

I do recall that the early 20amp alternator models up through 1964 had the diodes in the junction box, and starting in 1965 they were of a different design and located on the starboard side of the powerhead.

Which one do you have? (Hopefully someone will jump in here and send you the proper schematic).

Sorry that I couldn't be of more help.

" Joe, rectifier is the extern

" Joe, rectifier is the external mount later design mounted on the flywheel gear cover, starboard side. Regulator is later model solid state transistorized. I'll send those pictures anyhow. Thanks for your assistance, Marty. "
