" I have a 1999 90hp ficth evinrude O/B only 170
hrs dealer serviced and just pre-season checked

1'st trip in 04 worked great like always,
next trip engine just cut out and would idle only but no warning lights, noise or smoke.
Took to dealer no compression in 1 cyl and he
tells me needs rebuild said this was common for
this model year. Does this sound right???

"Geo.... Anything like that, which goes under the listing of "Major Failure" would be called common. It happens but it's not to be expected.

If piston damage, cylinder wall scoring, etc is present, then yes, the engine will require an overhaul, but keep in mind that powerheads do not fail by themselves, something caused it such as a fouled carburetor(s), weak ignition, head(s) not torqued properly, something of that nature.

If the cause is not found and corrected, a repeat of the powerhead failure would occur at some point down the road.

I'd suggest that you remove the cylinder heads to inspect the pistons, cyl walls, head and block sealing surfaces, gaskets etc.
