" ok joe ,,

i did locate so

" ok joe ,,

i did locate some fly wheels for my motor
thanks,,they are running around 1oo to 150
dollars,,,,ok here some tech talk,,plenty
of small engine experence here but on the lawn mower and chain saw side of the deal,,,the mechanic replaced the coils on this motor thinking that that was the problem,of course in the field again, failed because of the crack in the fly wheel,,counsumer gave up ,,then i bought it ,,carb was varnished, etc,,,in my hands now,,,new coils over looked fly wheel try to make a fly wheel work or didnt want to spend the money,,,etc ,when giving numbers on the underside of the fly wheel i get conflicting
nubers that do not match with the model number that are on my motor, iam am now thinking that maybe the wrong fly wheel was placed on this motor
after all i belive you have said you have never seen a cracked fly wheel in your thirty years..in my end of it i see at least from three to four a year due to hitting hard objects under the deck and etc,, so what may cause a fly wheel to crack in a out board motor? what causes the failure?
so here we go a johnson 1972 sea hourse model # 25RL72R serial number e3607495 in black perm marker on top of the fly wheel there is written #
581 789 under neath in cast the number 580982 j2d
appears,,,,,
we both know how many times a number can get super seaded most of the places are requsting the fly wheel be sent to match it uo but how do i know that iam sending the right fly wheel???

due to the really bad crack ,,,almost 360 degrees around the shank of the fly wheel since you hardly
see this why such a huge impact and why did it fail so badly????? correct numbers would be help ful and some are claiming that evinrude and johnsons are the same motors back then,,,can this casted fy whewel number still be traced back to its original owner?580982? i would like to be sure,,,,,,and if so i need to know the year and motor it belongs too,,,,,,

in the used businnes when buying,,,, just matching the fly wheel up doesnt seem to sit right with me
shouldnt the fly wheels have spec numbers and the motor as well have listings as acceptable fly wheels,,,,, ?????/

ok joe go at it ,,,iknow im askin for a big one,,,, and havin info that far back would be
well.....you know,,,,,,

"Mark.... A #25RL72R is indeed

"Mark.... A #25RL72R is indeed a 1972 25hp Johnson. The original flywheel number was OMC #580866 and is superceeded by OMC #581789. It has been unavailable since 1988 and at that time listed for $215.85.

The OMC flywheel key (the half moon key) number is #120395

Since you have described in some detail the way the flywheel is cracked, it all comes together!
The only way a flywheel can be cracked in the manner you speak of, and I quote ("the really bad crack ,,,almost 360 degrees around the shank of the fly wheel") is by someone using a automotive type puller that has three or four grabbing type arms which are grabbing the outter edges of the flywheel. When tightening up the center spindle, applying pressure against the top of the crankshaft, the outter grabbing flanges pull upwards on the edges of the flywheel, bending the outter edges upward, which eventually cracks the flywheel in the area you mention.

The proper puller has bolts that attach to the three threaded areas near the center of the flywheel which pulls directly on the steel tapered shank.
