Jammed strter Johnson HP 4

I have a 4 Hp engine which aft

I have a 4 Hp engine which after the winter lay off I'm finding impossible to start. The problem is that when I try to pull the starter cord it is totally jammed. I seem to remember that this happened before and I was able to release whatever was causing it to jam by hitting it somewhere. I'm not confident enough to try it without some advice so I'd really appreciate your help if you could. Thanks a lot. B2k

"If it's simply the manual starter that locks up after each winter layup, I would assume that you're getting moisture in it somehow.

Spray WD40 into it then tap it lightly with a small hammer. If that frees it, fine. If not, then a tear down of it will be required."
