"My guess is that they weren't changed last year. What are you using to remove them- bare hands? That won't work. Get a metal band type filter wrench and the metal kind that fits on the flutes at the end of the filter can- the kind that you attach to a ratchet wrench. That way, you don't need to make two trips and if one kind doesn't work, you can try the other one. If you end up destroying the filters, remove the can and filter element and you'll see that the steel plate has five or six holes in it. Stick the ends of a needle nose pliers into to opposing holes and use a Channel Lock pliers to turn the needle nose pliers. That's how I removed what was left of a filter that had been on a Malibu ski boat motor for over three years."

"And when installing the new ones, lube the gasket with motor oil and tighen 'em about 3/4 of a turn after the gasket contacts the base.

Jeff- I agree. Some people seem to think that there's a contest for who can get their filter tightest.

"You could try this, if there

"You could try this, if there is space to work around the filter. Use a pointed drift bar or wrecking bar about 24" long. Grind a point on one end if it is not already so.
Drive it right thru both sides of the filter housing as near to the base as you can. Watch that you dont drive it into the oilpan or anything else sensitive. The filter can is thin and it should drive thru fairly easily. Then use the bar to get the filter started. This has worked for me a couple of times.

"A jumbo channel lock pliers works great if you have the room. I use a rubber strap wrench that can grab on pretty tight if the filter is clean and dry. Like Rod said, get close to the filter base where it meets the block for the best leverage. Grabbing the filter in the middle will just crush the filter case.

When you put the new filter on, as FASTJEFF said, lube the gasket and also prime the filter with fresh engine oil until nearly full. Doing so reduces the dry start interval after oil and filter service.

"If you prime the filter, put your thumb over the center hole and fill the filter through the outer small holes. Same for fuel filters."
