I have a 1996 evinrude and the jack shaft for the starter stopped working and they wanted a hundred and twenty five dollars for the shaft but these can be fixed all you have to do is cut the bottom of the gear washer and slide the washer with the nut on the bottom of it and slide it out of the housing. Just cut a grove on each side on the bottom and go to the parts store and buy a bushing for a car shock and cut it 3/4 inches thick and slide it in the bottom of the gear housing then the washer with the nut on it you will have to us a C clamp to mash the rubber and use a hammer and a punch to knock it back in and this will fix your problem. Because there is a small amount of rubber in between the gear and the nut. It worked great for me and boat was back up and running and it's just a three dollar part for the bushing they are in the help section at the parts store
