"Having recently purchased this engine, I decided to change the lower unit oil. To my surprise, it was green color. I assume this is synthetic?

I replaced it with conventional high quality lower unit.

Is the green oil synthetic. Is it so much better to warrant going back to? Is there a problem changing back and forth? (residual mixing)

1998 J150 EXECD (25" extra long shaft)

Thanks,

Just pick an oil that is GL-5 rated and all should be fine.

Green oil? could be a sythetic - or maybe it was just moldy

"Yes, it is green- but it is clean and clear. Glad to know I did not mess up using conventional oil.

The inexpensive pump and hose kit that screws onto quart oil bottles makes it so much easier to do a lower unit oil check or change. Don't want to go back to squeezing that plastic tube.

Thanks to all-

Dave"
