"2 years ago I couldn’t get the motor to run over 5k RPM. Upon investigation it was found that #5 cylinder was dropping out above 5K rpm. The stator, timing base, coils, and PP checked out and the issue was finally resolved by replacing the flywheel. The exact cause of the problem was never identified.
Fast forward to yesterday. I took the boat out for a run. It idled poorly passing though the no wake zone and I couldn’t get above 4.5K rpm out on open water. A couple of times it kicked in and I could run WOT but drop back down to idle and try it again, nothing.
Here is another symptom. We trolled most of the day between 1000 – 1200 rpm and found that the motor would act up (buck, thump) when varying the rpm but would settle down to a “rhythmic” idle in short order.
Started trouble shooting this afternoon and found #5 cylinder not firing at idle. I’ll run through the whole test procedure in the morning but it just seems too much of a coincidence that it’s the #5 acting up again.
Hard to believe that it’s the flywheel again but the symptoms are too similar to dismiss. Any other ideas?"
