It Was All My Fault

"I couldn't get my battery

"I couldn't get my battery connected to my starter motor on my 35hp,Johnson to turn the flywheel fast enough to start the motor the other night.I had 3 charged batteries that couldn't turn flywheel fast enough to start my outboard but any of the 3 batteries had no problem starting my truck. So when I got home I gave each battery a 40 amp quick charge for 30 to 40 minutes and tried again,it worked and my motor fired right up.I can't believe that the battery had no problem starting my truck motor but was sluggish in turning the starter motor to a 35hp Johnson outboard. My question is it takes more cold cranking amps to start a 35hp Johnson outboard than a Toyota truck motor??The Sturgeon General."

"Probably not, I would guess it was a question of bad grounding on the outboard!!"

You have a problem with the st

You have a problem with the starter or wiring on the outboard. You should be able to start that with even a lawn tractor battery.Fix it now or risk getting stranded again. The charging system has been checked on the motor of course.

"Not-a-student, I have no battery re-charging system hooked up to my outboard motor. When I get back home after a fishing trip I hook batteries up to the charger for the next trip."

There is something wrong with

There is something wrong with the starter or wiring. If it was factory electric start it will have a charging system.

"Not-a-student the motor(powerhead) is a 1983,35hp,Johnson manual start, model no.#J35RTCS out of the factory,I had a starter motor from a 1979,electric start,CD2 ignition,35hp,Johnson,model no.#35E79A,that won't stay running because of a worn or loose fitting armature plate(wobble)and installed it on the 1983 powerhead because there is no way in hell you are going to start it by pulling the pull start rope(too much compression I suppose). This motor is a work of master ingenuity, it has a 1983 powerhead installed on a 1984 exhaust housing case and cowling with a 1979 lower unit,if you want to drop the lower unit, you have to pull the powerhead off because there is no access plate on the exhaust housing case to shifter linkages,in fact the shifter is the 1979 style shifter installed on the 1984 shifter style exhaust housing case. Two completely different types of shifters and works great, motor hauls ass, only problem area is getting flywheel to turn fast enough to start the motor,The Sturgeon General."

You might try to find a smalle

You might try to find a smaller (less teeth) gear for starter.
