I got my first outboard and boat last year.
First it ran fine, just didnt wanna go into gear. Got it into gear, used it 20min, and it died. Turned out to be a lead to the coil pack burned. I think that was the issue, I replaced the power pack, coil pack, and charge coil (coil pack looked crack, charge coil because I measured wrong on my multi, and finally power pack did the trick)
Long story short, PO sold me the outboard with a broken propshaft housing, aka 0 gear lube, and my lower unit seized.
Here's the issue; how do you properly get parts for this thing? I had to order 2 power packs, neither one was right.
This one, the orange leads are way too short, mine were much longer.
And the one below, the round 5 pin didnt wanna sit on all the way, and it started but kill switch didnt work, as the pin didnt reach I presume, so I had to cut a little off the 5pin connector to get it to work (jank)
You can see I made it work, and it ran fine, but its obviously not right.
So I had this mess and a broken lower unit.
Went on ebay, found someone who pulled one from a similar year 6hp, and boom, shift shaft is too short. also the drive shaft is .25" longer
they also sent me a power pack from i believe the same unit, and it also goes on, but not fully snug
see below
versus this is how the old one sat
Now, the seller on ebay will get me the right lower unit, but that leads me to think. What parts do I even search for? I have a standard 95 e6reod, yet even looking at the part no for the power pack, it looks like its been updated to 0586800, and all the ebay knock offs seem to have short orange leads, yet the real one looks like it has long leads

Can someone help me? What is going on with these part nos, where do I look for parts, why did mine come with extra long leads, Just not sure of anything with this thing, im just tryna fish.
Also I bought the manual and been using that for reference on how to do certain procedures. I had a question, is it normal for these to have a tiller which doesnt rotate super smoothly, it is 30 years old. What needs to serviced on it to get it to move smooth?
