issues running after link and sync

this winter i did a lot of backlogged work on my merc 850 thunderbolt including a new cap and rotor so just to be safe i figured i would do a quick link and sync. now after i did that i fired the engine up and it runs great as long as i give it more than about quarter throttle if i go under that it dies as if spark cuts. is this related to me incorrectly link and syncing? or is it possible my idle is just not adjusted high enough, and if its the idle how do i properly adjust that? i also rebuild the carbs but like i said it seems as if spark is cut when it dies not fuel.

The idle speed is a function of spark advance only. The carbs MUST stay closed until about 3/4 throttle is attained. See that this is what is happening and advance the spark enough to raise the idle speed.

So just to be sure im understanding i should turn in my idle stop screw untill it will idle. The carbs are not engaging until about 3/4 throttle so i got that part right.
