is water pump bad?

newbie here just picked up a used 77 Evinrude 9.9 just fired it up. started just fine after a few pulls to prime the carb. anyway how long dose it take to warm up? how long does it take for the water pump to start spraying a steady stream of water. when it first started there was a little trickle coming out then it slowed to a steady drip with about a second between drips. I ran the motor about 5 minutes, had turned off the choke so it felt like it should have been warmed up. thoughts?

Difficult to see in the video but is there a good bit of water being blown out of the exhaust pressure relief port? If there is then maybe the telltale is simply blocked. Check/ clean the hose and the nipples at each end.

Is the engine overheating if you run it for longer ?

BTW you will find everything you will ever need to know about the Evinrude 9.9 on LeeRoy's ramblings at https://www.leeroysramblings.com/Outboard Motor Related/OMC outboard related articles.html
There is a long section on the cooling system and its troubles

Vic is great advice. Probably the pee hole or the fitting in the powerhead that leads to the pee tube is dirty. Just did a 7.5 1982 this morning. This one still has original OMC impeller, so I will probably change that anyway. I can tell it has original water pump because the paint is still on the lower unit screws. Since they are stainless, it is impossible to R&R them without some paint chipping off. Look at yours to see if they have been removed. That takes all of 10 seconds.

I will check the screws, and check the hole and tube for clogs. I will run the motor a little longer, and make a better video. I only had it at idle so I am not sure if it would warm up in 5 minutes. water was coming out at the exhaust holes, so that worked. and that Amsoil oil works really well hardly any smoke. very happy about that thanks everyone here

How do you know the Amsoil is working really well. You have only used it for a few minutes at idle.
You will only know that if you have no trouble in the long term and dismantle the engine to check for, and measure, any wear after many hours of operation. By then it could be too late to avoid expensive repairs.

If water is coming out of the exhaust back pressure relief port then you probably have no trouble with the cooling other than a blocked telltale. If you start to get steam coming out then that's a sign of lack of cooling

But if you dont know when the water pump impeller was last changed changing it anyway would be quite a good idea.

You’re right I have no clue if the amsoil is working any better than anything else. I was just going off the lack of smoke I am used to seeing when the motor is fired up. I will order a new water pump, not knowing when or if it has ever been changed better safe than sorry.

5 minutes is way, way to long to wait for water discharge. It should start discharging almost immediately, and no you don't have to wait for the thermostat to open. However, I see it spraying out the exhaust relief holes in your video.

BTW, water spraying out the exhaust relief has gone through the powerhead and done it's job. Water coming out the telltale squirt is before going through the powerhead. Nice if you just like to watch it pee, but the exhaust relief discharge is more meaningful

Thanks I am learning more about this motor. So if I have a dribble to drips of water coming out of the telltale that will be ok?

No... Water should shoot out that tell-tale outlet like it was shooting out of a garden hose full force.

The engine sitting in a barrel or on the boat, the water level should be a few inches above the water pump (is it?) as the pump is NOT a self priming pump. If the water level is not above the pump, the pump will draw air.

It looks adequately submerged in the video , but exhaust gas may affect the pump!

Mr. Vic, you are an exceptional tech....I know that. Amsoil is the best 2 stroke oil ON THE PLANET. I have used it for 40 years and at 2 resorts in remote NW Ontario, where a failed outboard can put you at a risk of death. I have a 1952 5 hp Johnson that I have used on small boats for bass and northern on portage lakes and river systems. I have mixed Amsoil at between 50 and 64 to 1 for the last 40 years for this motor. I expect to run a video for all to see this little gem at work. I will also post a video of my 65 Fisherman 6 with 4000 hours on it.....original powerhead. This has been mixed at 64:1 for 40 years as well. I will put it up against ANY new motor in its class and you would not believe its performance. I have been in active outboard repair for 50 plus years and all my customers get a 1 year warranty on my work, plus a quart of 100:1 Amsoil fully synthetic 2 stroke pre-mix oil. My warranty is honored when the boat owner runs Amsoil and non-oxy fuel only. I have had only 2 claims in all the years. I work on about 50 motors a year on average. Wintertime our family sells firewood.

You maybe right that the water pump isn’t submerged. If you look at the video you maybe able to tell better than me. I did take a can of compressed air and sent some puffs up the telltale and I could here it escape out the lower end by the intake screens. I would fire it up today but it’s raining pretty good. I hoping it will let up later.

Hey, rumtum, how do I post a video of these old "smokers"? Should have been "wallhangers" by now but they're still pushin' boats around. Thanks, brother.
