"I ran into the shop guy that re-did my heads for the boat the other day and in our discussion he claimed that the reason thes one head if not both had such rusting was due to a corroded block off plate in the RISER Connection to the manifold. Could this be true? If so, I believe the new stuff has the same Stainless Steel plates. Is there a way to check for deterioration or is this simply a matter of age? I do not have any idea what the last maintenance records are like, BUT IF everything else I touch in front of me is ANY indication, I am sure is POOR at best."

It's Usually the errosion of the gasket Surfaces of the Manifolds,+ Risers themselves that are the Issue......
Not necessarily the block-off plate...."

"Bondo, When I removed the elbows, which was no easy task, they did not look bad as flat surfaces. I did however, need to use a 3" cut off tool slice thru 1/5 of the seam between the manifold and elbow to break the rust tension welding the assembly together. The stainless plate looked rotted but this is my first exposure to this system. I do understand the need for truly flat surfaces but maybe MY perceptions is inaccurate and the little rust I had was truly the problem."

Ayuh,......

That's enough to tell me, You need a New Set.....
Or,.... Said another way,.....
I wouldn't put them back on......"

From the rebuilt heads UP..it

From the rebuilt heads UP..it is all new. I was wondering IF the newer style manifolds and center mounted risers would work on my 1990 engines? That's why I am thinking about those old noisey fiberglass tube type mufflers...

Almost forgot...should I have

Almost forgot...should I have smeared some kind of NON-stick stuff between the elbows and manifolds to eliminate that stuck on problem in the future?

I used anti sieze between gask

I used anti sieze between gaskets and iron. Logic was to prevent rusted surfaces. Been there for 4 years now with no trouble at all. Since that time I found others doing the same thing.

Also U used a flat Diamond surface knife sharpener to hone the gasket surface first. got it nice and flat. all new bolts and nuts.

"Ok Stephen,

Now you've got me. You flat sanded the GASKET or the gasket mating surface? I have all new nuts and bolts and I actually will be finishing the engine like one I saw here a few months back... IT was georgeous !! My problem ( WHICH I HOPE TO HAVE FOR A LONG TIME) is that one will look tricked out and the other is blue !"
