Is this thing worth keeping> - Johnson 9.9

Purchased a small boat at the end of last season. It came with what is left of this outboard.
Seller seemed honest enough and said it runs great.

The numbers I found on it are: J10RCUE and 6221468
Near as I can tell, it is a 1987, 9.9 hp.

I know I need a complete tiller handle assembly, and all of knobs, etc for the kill, mixture and choke.
I also need a fuel tank and line.
I'm having a heck of a time finding parts that I am sure are the correct ones for this thing.

I snapped a few pics (below) of what I have.

So my question is.... is this thing worth keeping and are parts available for it?
And also, What do the wires go to?

Every single correct part can be found here: http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1987&hp=9.9&model=J10RCUE

First thing, I'd do a few checks before spending a dime.

1) Get a compression tester and check both cylinders. If it has sat for a long time you might spray fogging oil in each spark plug hole first.

2) Use an air gap spark plug tester and make sure both coils have good fire and will just a 7/16" gap

3) Drain the lower unit and inspect the oil for large metal shavings or significant amounts of water.

If all three of those check out fine it might be worth putting a little money into the engine.

A good running 9.9 can sell for $500 easy. It looks like this was rigged up to be used for remote throttle and steering. You can probably find the tiller handle and flame arrestor on Ebay. All the other knobs and bits and pieces can be purchased here at a reasonable price.

Great!
Thanks!

So am I correct in assuming that the wires are for the remote throttle/steering, and if I can find the tiller handle, etc I can eliminate them?

Just curious, where is the flame arrestor located?

I am a complete newbie when it comes to outboards.
Cars/trucks are more my forte... lol

Thanks again for the info!

And - once running you can upgrade this to a 15 HP with a different Carb, and some shims under the leaf valves. These 9.9/15's are great little motors.

CMOS

Keep an eye on craigslist for a fixer upper around the same year 9.9 and 15hp. If you can find a 15hp with a blown powerhead it should have everything you need to upgrade also.

Where did you hear about a flame arrestor I believe the older motors had a screen in front of the carb but you engine had a air silencer. Pretty sure it did not have a flame arrestor.

Flame arrestor, air silencer...whatever is the correct term, it's part #'s 37 and 38 in this diagram.

Most engines have them but you're right, some don't. I had an early 2000's 25HP that had no air box. I thought it was missing until I researched and found around that time OMC/BRP decided it was a reasonable cost savings and omitted them. I think all of the 9.9/15 engines had the silencer.

Flame arrestor/air silencer goes on the front of the carb.

Is there an electric start on this engine? Those wires look like they are for a start/run circuit. IF there is you won't want to remove them.

The big bolt coming out the front and the rigged up red metal in place of the tiller handle are odd. I'm thinking that bolt is supposed to be your throttle control. Maybe the red metal thing was steering?

The thing in front of the gear shift is meant to clamp a shift cable in place so you can have remote shifting.

I was able to locate someone with a complete 1992 Evinrude 15 hp for parts.

Does anyone know if the parts I need are interchangeable?

Leeroys ramblings has alot of good info for your motor or motors if you decide to get the other one going. If you have HP restrictions put all the good parts on the 9.9 in case of the anal retentive fish and game officer. I doubt he/she will look down the throat of the carb. The reason they make the 9.9 is because most restrictions are on 10hp and up you need to get them registered in some states also.
