Hi All first time poster but follow forums regular.

I have a 1977 70 HP Johnson Seahorse. After taking the boat out a few days
ago and running down river about half throttle the motor stuttered and then
quit. It gave no noises other than the stutter. Now it is locked up. The flywheel will
not turn at all. I tried with hand and with a wrench. I can also out motor
in gear and the prop wont turn but will in nuetral, Whcih leads me to think the
problem is in the top half rather than the lower.

The lower unit is full of oil we checked that. I only run 50:1 mixture. The impellar
is only 3 months old and was pumping very good as I had just looked back and
checked before it quit. Infact that day the motor started good and was running
smooth as could. usually cranks by the second turn this day on a half a turn of key.

I use this boat 2-3 times a week with no problem besides a starter problem a while back
that I fixed. I keep the motor flushed out after every trip no matter what kind of water
I go into. Although its almost always fresh or brackish...

Is this now a junk motor ? What could have happened ? If it is junk now
is there a market for this motor like it is and whats it worth ?

Sorry for long post.

pull the cylinder head off for an inspection.------------Any particles in the gear oil ???------------Pull the lower unit off to confirm if it is the powerhead or broken gears !!

Well I was thinking about dismantling the thing next week. Then I went outside took the cover off and
got a much closer look and this is something I found. This can't be good ! I noticed a crack and small hole
around the manifold. Would you suggest I still go in to have look or just consider it done ?

Looks like a rod bolt broke / came loose or piece of the piston skirt broke off.----------You have a " parts motor " sell it for what you can get.
