Is this engine compatible?

I have a 2005 Mercruiser 5.0L TKS which needs to be changed. I found a 2004 Mercruiser 5.0L MPI. My mechanic says that it's not compatible, is it true? See attached my engine and the one I found.

Ayuh,..... If you swap the entire bobtail motor, it's doable, though there'll be a few mods, such as some wiring, maybe,.....
But, if any of the sensors, or 'puter ain't with it, it'll get ungodly expensive, Quickly,....

what kind of wiring?
By sensors you mean the temp sensor?

IF the MPI engine is being sold to you as a complete and running engine it should be a straightforward swap. You may have to retain the bell housing from your original engine. I think your compatibility issue is your mechanic.... find another one.

The new engine MPI engine looks like it’s more set up for a bravo stern drive being it has a water pump housing down to the (our) left side at looking at the photo… your alpha drive has a water pump in the stern drive… not a total dealbreaker as you could have options to choose from for water flow connections for the right shop/person doing the installation that knows what they are doing between the two engines.

The horsepower should go up from 220 to 260 probably not really enough for gear changes and a rough call on prop sizing until the boat is ran but just know they did come with different options as far as gearing’s go.

The engine should drop in and connect easily but the in gear indicator sensor that the MPI uses at the shifter plate may be an additional reason for their concern.
You may have to inquire about swapping ECM’ with some one to get an alpha version.

Doable? Yes but added modification changes are possibilities as you get involved.

If you’re serious, get the engine serial number and try to get the shift plate that isn’t mounted to the exhaust manifold.

As outlined above if it is a complete bobtail then it could work

Biggest issue is the bravo engine will not have shift interrupt to work with your alpha drive. You would have to get a merc dealer reflags the ecu for an alpha application and ditch the seawater pump and just use the alpha impeller in drive
