Had a problem with shifting into reverse and it staying there .You responded on thread before about why it wasnt woring with the shift cam at the top of shifter being out of place.I've tryed everything trying to get it to work with the L/U off you could manually(and I would add use a 10mm deep well socket not vise grips to move shifter)into F-N-R you could spin the drive shaft CW as always and it would turn the prop which ever way and in N it would free spin like it should but R would make it go the same as F locked into place.Thats why the tear down

Humm... The 'bullet' that sticks out of the propshaft; does it move aft all the way (as seen in the slot? Hard to describe. Sorry.) The piece that slides on the propshaft must slide all the way back to engage reverse.

When you say bullet are you talking about the cam pin ?in pic 2 that sticks out?and it hits the slots in the follow cam that is attached to shift shaft?keep in mind this L/U unit could manualy shift out of the boat you could move it into all gears but only get F to lock in place.I dont know wither to get a new shift dog clutch or a new pin and follow cam not my boat but I do know he's got way more in the boat then its worth at this point. And Jeff you get up mighty early to anserw questions. But thanks for the time

When the L/U off you could move shift shaft to F turn the drive shaft and it would turn prop not sur eof the direction but you only turn in one direction click to N free spin smooth put in R it would lock just like it would while in F move the same way

Go to almost any Mercury motor that is assembled.--------------When control and lower unit are in FORWARD then you can not move propshaft counterclockwise. You will be able to spin the propshaft easily going clockwise and it will ratchet.----When in REVERSE it will lock in both directions.

That may be well and good but your over looking the whole problem. The L/U unit will not stay in R or go into R your answers to my probl;em are not very helpful there not even relevent.I dont think

Post a close-up picture of the shift cam ,the spot where the pin sits when in reverse.----Post close-up pictures of the reverse gear edges and the same edges on the shifter dog.

Shift cam looks to be in good condition. It has to have some' to do with the linkage or its position when assembled.
