Just bought this motor a week ago and it appears in excellent shape--even the prop has original paint & no chips. A possible problem is I don't get any telltale when it's running in a water barrel. The only access cover on the lower unit is a small plug over the shifter linkage. The "lower unit" looks to be a 1-piece casting all the way up to the power head so how is it cooled or flushed?

"The 5M was a Yamaha built, Air-Cooled single cylinder model - so no impeller and nothing to flush internally.

If you run it in salt simply hose off the lower unit after use to keep it from corroding...

It does however, come off of the exhaust housing. It's held on by two bolts (under) the cavitation plate..."

Does the little pipe under the cavitation plate--open end aimed at the prop--feed water to cool the exhaust? The manual says to watch for water to exit the upper exhaust ports but I get nothing. Tried air from my compressor but it sounds like the air just goes into the lower unit and none comes out the upper ports.

Is this a good design? The manual is explicit that damage will result if there's no water coming from the ports yet it only gets this water when in forward gear. What happens during the manual's recommended several-minute cool-down while in idle?

Am I worrying about nothing?? LOL
