How do
I'm one who just don't learn from the frist time.
I bought a used mercury 650 ser.#2716000 the old guy a bought it from said that the ign.box needs to be replaced .He said that the hardness on the boat shorted and took out the ign.
he said that he did a test using a test light and if it failed the test that the ign.box has to be replaced. is there a test that can be performed to find out if it in/op.
the box bolts to the front of the motor case it a alum.box housing with green top has 3 term's stud's on the side with the backing of red/white /blue color for Ea. stud.
And is there any way of talking you out of a wiring digram for this motor.
as I said at the start not learning.
my frist motor was a 60hp.v-4 Ev. bought at a yard sale well so many trips to the lake .followed up by taking it apart when i get back from the lake I learned alot about the v-4 but it did not have the power i needed.so now its the merc.and i have to get it going . you know I have a wife
Hey thank you for your time.
And please let me know

"According to your ser.# you have a CDI battery driven ignition, check for battey voltage at the
red termial with the key switch in the run pos.,
If you have voltage place the switch in the start
pos. and observe voltage, other checks with a multimeter are limited, one I've found sometimes
works is to check the red terminal with meter in the high ohm's setting, with all wires disconnected, if it's shorted to ground
it's done, there are no other tests I know of
except with Merc specialized test equipment."

MERCURY BATTERY-POWERED CDI TEST
FOR DISTRIBUTOR MODELS

This test is for the 332-2986 switchbox used from 1967-1978 on all the inlines.

This test assumes your coil is good (most all are).

DISCONNCT BATTERY

1. Turn off ignion
2. Disconnect all 3 wires on the distributor side of the switchbox.
3. Remove the HV lead from the coil to the center cap (remember it unscrews
from cap)
4. Reconnect that HV center lead to the COIL side only.
5. Position that HV lead about about 3/8" from ground (block, shrouds etc)
and find a way to hold it there.
6. Jumber the brown and white terminals on the dist. side of the switchbox
together.

RECONNECT BATTERRY

7. Check that you have +12 V at red terminal.
8. Turn on ignition and verify +12V at white terminal (on red terminal side)
9. Touch the black terminal to ground - unit should cause spark each time
you touch ground.

If that passes and it won't fire at all, suspect the trigger"
