Seems to me a cross reference

Seems to me a cross reference would be a handy thing to have. Does one exist?

I just bought a 1972 165HP with GM straight 6. Is that an "Alpha"? It doesn't have a lower unit. What do I look for?

"Ayuh,....

Mercruiser goes

"Ayuh,....

Mercruiser goes by Serial #s,... Not necessarily the Vintage...
Some insight can be gained by the listings in the Parts listings....

A 1976 is a Model 1 outdrive,... Pre-Alpha...."

"So, if I'm kicking around

"So, if I'm kicking around a bunch of old boats including parts, some of which are Merc outdrives, how can I identify a Model 1? Is it the same outdrive even if it's not 165Hp? What if it was on the same year, but a V8 motor? might it still be the same?

As you can tell, this is the FIRST Mercruiser I've ever been serious about.

I actually had a 1970 90Hp with a Renoe motor, but that was a bad deal. I sold it for junk. With the help of this message board, I hope to not repeat that episode."
