Is my stat bad?

Good day guys, I just received a 30 hp Mariner, 2 cylinder one carb, serial number 30 ML 689 L 331200 that was submerged 5 years ago, and yesterday I got it running.

Now, when the motor ran (actually it raced) the water coming out of the tell tale hole was hot (atfirst cold) and the water coming out of the tell tale hole was between a steady stream and a trickle (i.e. not a strong stream).

Also while running, the thermostat/exaust/close to spark plug holes were hot to the touch after 20 seconds of running. So, I shut it off. When trying to take a look at the stat, I twisted off (quite freely actually) one out of the 3 thermostat bolts. When running I noticed the area around the thermostat getting wet (i.e. dripping water).

My questions are;
-Could I have opened the seal somewhat when the bolt sheard?
-Does it sound like the thermostat is bad? If so, should I still try and take off the cover to clean up the area/test thermostat?
-What should I do next?

Upfront thanks for any help, i'm stuck guys throw me a life saver ring!

All the best.

You need to stick to one thread and stop reposting the same old information at the beginning of each thread because you are confusing the $hit out of me. Did you ever change the thermostat?

Its a different motor, the originals were based on my 1985 40 hp, this newer post is based on a 1988 30hp.

The water coming out of the tell tail hole is warm, and its not a hard/steady stream. What do you think the problem is?

Sorry man...check the impeller and pull the hose off the nipple to see if water shoots out. If it does the hose is plugged w/spider nest, etc.

I think it is the thumb screw on the clamp bracket. I really can`t believe your still trying to figure it out I am sure the answers are in at least five of the last 20 threads you started on this motor. Just replace the thermostat then you know its good!

Its a different motor than the previous threads

The tell tale hole is basically underneath the bottom cowling. I don't see any hose going to it. Can you give me any more advise?

There should be a hose coming out of the top of the engine that runs to the cowling TT nipple.

No hose on that model (at least I've never found one). Near as I can tell, water gets to the tell-tale via an internal passageway from the engine block to the upper part of the drive shaft housing. You can, however, rig up a hose to a small diameter vinyl tube, hold the tube firmly against the tell-tale outlet, and, squirt water in through the tell tale to loosen a clog (and also see if the water exits via the exhaust and thermostat ports.

Mr. Minuteman, thank you for the tip. I'll update you.
